All About Me!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Alyssa and I was diagnosed with Celiac disease just over a year ago. It wasn’t much of a surprise to me as both of my sisters had already been diagnosed and it is a genetically inherited gene. In fact, check out these lucky genes!

-maternal uncle: ulcerative colitis

-maternal uncle: Chrone’s disease

-maternal aunt: collagenous colitis

Gee! I guess I lucked out with Celiac! All of these diseases affect the small intestine, but different regions. Celiac, for example, affects the cilia on the villi of the small intestine, whereas Chrones disease is located in the TI region of the small intestine (terminal illium). They are relatively close, and when you get tested for one or the other, they typically will take biopsies of both regions to make a diagnosis.

Ok, enough of the anatomy lesson!

I just married the love of my life, Jeff, a little over 8 months ago, and married life is wonderful…minus the ocean that separates us!! A Colorado to Hawaii commute is not what most consider a typical first year of marriage. Alas, we will be united once again in May 🙂 Can’t wait!

I have always been thin, but since my Celiac symptoms started, I have had some serious food and slight depression issues. I just recently discovered a few food blogs that focus on clean and natural eating and also took a yoga nutrition class that opened my eyes to actually eating! Who knew that fat could be GOOD for you!  Within a few days of eating clean, I was able to lose about 5 lbs! Not that I needed to lose weight, but up until that point, losing weight was not possible…I just couldn’t shake any poundage!

I am looking forward to sharing ideas, recipes, and meeting cool people!

Blog on!
